In any work environment, it is crucial to have personal responsibility. This involves all the things that we have control over, for example, our actions, reactions and thoughts. It doesn’t apply strictly to work, but also to our daily life. Listening to ourselves, knowing when to take a break from things that cause us stress or anguish is part of our personal responsibility because this translates into more efficient work and better personal relationships with coworkers. We are humans and we need to treat ourselves as such. We need to understand that we are not perfect, and attending to our needs and feelings is probably the most important part of our personal responsibility.

When it comes to the workplace, to me, one of the first things we need to be aware of is how we act and what decisions we make. In a team every member has to be responsible for the effort they put in, and the relationship they have with their coworkers, based strictly on mutual respect. Self-discipline and direction are also important. We have to stay focused on our tasks, avoid procrastination and learn to be efficient with our time. It’s also important to set realistic goals so that we can feel that we are improving. We also have to know that if we don’t reach our goals as fast as we thought we would or as easy, it’s OK; the important part is to never give up and stay consistent with our effort, that’s personal responsibility to me.

Personal responsibility also means improving the knowledge we have outside of working hours. Since computer engineering is the career we chose, we should find it entertaining. Therefore, gathering more knowledge with online courses, podcasts or books shouldn’t be seen as an effort, rather as a pleasure. This not only benefits the company itself; it also benefits each person individually, the quality of our work and our worth as professionals. To conclude, personal responsibility can only have a positive outcome for those who acknowledge it. In the end, it means we can better ourselves in our relationship with ourselves and others, which will only lead to achieving our highest potential.
